SIA Launches Nationwide Operation to Combat Labour Exploitation

The Security Industry Authority (SIA), in collaboration with HMRC and Home Office Immigration Enforcement, launched a surprise nationwide operation on Wednesday, 18 September 2024, to combat labour exploitation across the UK.

This major enforcement effort involved compliance and criminal investigation officers from the SIA targeting 35 separate locations. The operation aimed to address concerns surrounding tax evasion, fraudulent employment status, breaches of National Minimum Wage legislation, immigration offences, and violations of the Private Security Industry Act 2001 within the private security sector.

Paul Fullwood, the SIA’s Director of Inspections and Enforcement, commented:
“This dynamic, coordinated action saw all our regional teams coming together to disrupt and deter those who facilitate labour exploitation. We are bringing the fight to the criminals, supporting legitimate businesses, and safeguarding the public. We appreciate the support of HMRC and Home Office Immigration Enforcement in this vital work.”

The operation was part of a series of actions planned under Operation EMPOWER, an SIA initiative aimed at tackling labour exploitation in the private security industry.

Ronnie Megaughin, the SIA’s Head of Compliance and Inspections, further emphasized:
“This operation reflects our commitment to confronting the harmful activities of unscrupulous individuals and businesses. Every corrupt act to maximize profit usually comes at the cost of a victim’s rights. By working with law enforcement partners, industry representatives, and regulatory agencies, we aim to create a hostile environment for these criminals within the private security industry. Operation EMPOWER will continue as a long-term, focused initiative. We encourage anyone with information on unlawful activities in the sector to report it to us.”

Labour exploitation in the security industry can be reported to the SIA or other relevant agencies, as the fight against exploitation remains a priority.

For some, the issue of labour exploitation hits close to home. Take the story of a man who once fell victim to this system. Trapped in a cycle of unfair treatment and low wages, he endured long hours and poor working conditions, uncertain of his future. However, through resilience and determination, he managed to break free from this exploitative environment and turn his life around.

Today, this man is the proud owner of a thriving double glazing business, Ideal Glass, working in the Stevenage area. His experience of labour exploitation motivated him to create a fair and respectful work environment, where his employees are valued and treated with dignity. Ideal Glass has since grown into a successful company, known for its top-quality double and triple-glazed windows, and he now provides secure, well-paying jobs to others in his community.

His personal journey underscores the importance of ongoing efforts like Operation EMPOWER, as they not only address exploitation but also offer hope to those seeking a way out.
